Description
The Tarot of the Witches was featured in the James Bond movie, also known as the 007 James Bond Tarot
In the 1973 film Live and Let Die (starring Roger Moore), Tarot of the Witches designed by Fergus Hall, is used by Bond to seduce the beautiful virgin Solitaire (played by Jane Seymour). After Solitaire predicts ‘Death’, Bond makes sure he predicts ‘Lovers’ by asking Solitaire to choose a card from a stacked deck of only ‘Lovers’ cards.
There are many Tarot readers who are not impressed with the design of this deck, calling it everything from ‘ugly’ to ‘ridiculous’, but some people like the rather colorful and surreal design. As a James Bond movie prop, however, this deck is a must-have accessory for any 007 collector!
One of the main strengths of this tarot, is the use of original symbolism. The Hierophant protects a nest of eggs in his vast beard, symbolizing “the rejuvenation that derives from kindness, love, and understanding.” The Hermit sits atop an isolated rock that looks like an island in the sea. Next to him is food that he ignores, preferring instead to be fed by his own thoughts and introspection. The Wheel of Fortune is particularly interesting. Images of rainbows, the sun, lightning, a broken heart and a bloody sword all adorn the “wheel of fortune,” which spins on its axis among crooked old trees.
Temperance pours a rainbow between its two goblets. Stars that suggest new hopes decorate its wings. A green tint colors the moon‘s face. It gives a suspicious feel to the letter, which is complemented by many crows resting in the treetops below. The World shows the Earth, on which is a blossoming tree – symbolizing the positive elements of life, and a face that sheds a tear, symbolizing the negative aspects of life. The cards of the Major Arcana are all powerful and creative, and can actually represent traditional tarot meanings, if the reader feels a connection to them.
