The Tarot of the Runes: A New Way to Explore Ancient Symbols
What is the Tarot of the Runes?
The Tarot of the Runes is a modern version of the traditional runes, presented in deck format. This set consists of 26 cards, each representing one of the rune symbols.
The Origin of the Runes
The runes, which inspire the Tarot das Runas, are an ancient writing system used by the Germanic and Nordic peoples, especially in Scandinavia, during the Middle Ages. Each runic symbol has a unique meaning and was used for a variety of purposes, from everyday communications to magical rituals.
Historical Uses of Runes
In medieval times, runes played a significant role. They were used for:
- Recording important events: Such as battles and political treaties.
- Religious and magical rituals: These were spiritual tools often associated with mystical powers.
- Divination practices: Used by seers and healers to guide communities.
Runes in Modern Times
Today, runes continue to be a popular tool in esoteric and spiritual practices. The Tarot of the Runes adapts this ancient tradition into an accessible format, allowing its symbols to be interpreted in a similar way to traditional rune reading.
How does reading the Tarot Runes work?
- Interpretation of the Symbols: Each card in the Tarot of the Runes represents a symbol with a specific meaning.
- Personalized Messages: Combinations of the symbols provide unique messages tailored to each person’s needs.
- Self-knowledge tool: Just like traditional runes, the Tarot of the Runes is a powerful tool for exploring spiritual and emotional issues.
What are Runes?
Runes are an ancient form of oracle used by those seeking advice. Runes have a long history, dating back to ancient use by Germanic and Nordic tribes, and are still widely used in today’s society.
The word “rune” simply means mystery, whisper or secret and is a form of divination or oracle reading system that is used to help obtain information about situations or questions. Runes can be made of various materials, but are most often made of stone and crystals and feature a symbol from the runic alphabet.
There are several different types of runic alphabets used in runes, the origin of the Rune Tarot, with one of the oldest being the ancient Germanic runic alphabet known as “Elder Futhark”. The Elder Futhark contains 24 runes, the first six of which spell the word “futhark”. The runes form a set of 24 ancient alphabetic symbols used as divination tools, like an oracle that helps predict the future. It is possibly one of the oldest and most significant oracles in the world.
Over time, this was adapted, and in order to use it for writing in Anglo-Saxon or Old English, several other runes were added to the alphabet, bringing it to 33. This is known as the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc.
Another adaptation is the Futhark Younger, or Scandinavian, which is believed to have been used in Scandinavia until the 17th century. All these variations highlight the changes made as people moved and emigrated to different countries.
Just as each runic symbol is a letter of the alphabet, they also have symbolic meanings. While many of these go back to traditional meanings, such as the Runes Tarot, which would mean a lot to people using the runic alphabet, the intent behind the symbols still has relevance today.
For example, in Elder Futhark:
Fehu, F, means domestic cattle or wealth.
Uruz, U, means a wild ox.
Thurisaz, T, means a thorn or a giant.
Hagalaz, H, means hail.
Ansuz, A, means an ancestral god.
Raidho, R, means wagon or chariot.
Kenaz, K, means a beacon or a torch.
