Description

The fascinating and intriguing work of Tarot or Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot was conceptualized by the famous occultist and Golden Dawn member, Aleister Crowley, and created by Lady Frieda Harris, his student. This edition of the deck has 80 cards, which includes three versions of the Magician card.

It is based on the philosophy of Thelema, according to Liber AL vel Legis, as described in the related book “TheBook of Thoth“, also authored by him.

Crowley tarot cards are named after Englishman Aleister Crowley (1875 – 1947) and were created by him and painter Lady Frieda Harris (1877 – 1962). He was an occultist and a great connoisseur of ancient ways of initiation, combining the themes of tarot cards with the world of magic, alchemy, astrology, Kabbalah and the myths of the peoples, especially the ancient Egyptians. Crowley founded the Thelema Abbey in Sicily and belonged to the Masonic OTO (Ordo Templi Orientis), which he took over in 1925.

Lady Frieda Harris was her student and painted under her guidance for 5 years in the 78 images that became the basis for today’s Tarot Crowley cards.
The tarot deck consists of 24 cards of Major Arcana and the remaining 56 Tarot cards are the Minor arcana, which are divided into 4 color series (wands, swords, cups, pentacles), which in turn consist of the numerical series of Ace (1) to 10 and the 4 cards of Princess, Page, Queen and King/Knight.

Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot combines tarot with the worlds of Magic, Alchemy, Astrology and Kabbalah. It has extensive use of geometry, myths and symbols and gives it a distinctly “masculine” feel.

It is a tarot that provides such deep clarity and precise guidance in readings and that either falls in love at first sight or repudiates, because it has a very own energy that is not for everyone. In the latter cases, if you want to work with this deck, there will have to be a daily adaptation to each card and its energy and you will have to have patience in that process.

Each card is filled with a myriad of archetypal symbols, each adding a potential meaning to the card.

Although the guide book brings some information, for this deck is not enough due to its energetic informative complexity and therefore should have a good book to use as a reference. There is the Book of Thoth by Crowley, written by him and the Tarot Mirror of the Soul of Gerd Zeigler. It is one of the most concise books for this deck, but covers almost every detail and symbol found on each card. It also has a picture of each letter on the same page as its meaning.

In short, this deck offers infinite variations of meaning that result in more specific readings.

Containing 78 cards, this tarot requires study and some time for energetic adaptation. It also contains pocket book (English) of 48 pages of the same size as the letters. Both are contained inside a cardboard box.

Tarot Sizes

Some authors and publishers have chosen to have several tarot sizes of this same copy. They are: Pocket, medium or standard and large or deluxe. They differ between them only in the size of the cards and the guide book. There are also kits that are a more enhanced build of this same deck.

We can compare a Tarot Kit to a home computer and the other tarot sizes to a Tablet or Mobile Phone. As its name implies, a kit is much more complete. The boxes are stronger and more robust, brings a larger and more complete book with images and even card release schemes, the tarot story and more. Cards are usually the same size as the average or standard tarot, except for some authors. When you buy a Kit, you buy a more sophisticated product of this tarot. It is suitable for those who want to understand this tarot in depth or for those who are starting in the art of perceiving energy and messages through cards.
