Although called the tarot deck, this Tarot of the Angels of Radleigh Valentine&Doreen Virtue Spanish (El Tarot de los Angeles) looks and reads more like a deck of oracles. The cards are large and the card is robust, but also shiny and slippery. All these factors can make it a challenging deck to shuffle. The back of the cards have an image of archangel Michael and the overall color of this deck is silver-plated blue on each card.

The Major Arcana follow roughly the tradition of the Rider Waite Smith. The Madman is renamed “The Dreamer”; the Hierophanent for the “Unit”; the Wheel of Fortune simply for “The Wheel”; the Hanged for the “Awakening”; Death is “Free”; Temperance is “Balance”; the devil is called “ego”; the Tower becomes “Life Experience” and the Judgment is “Renewal”.

Doreen Virtue softened the “gravity” of some letters. For example, she interprets the fifteenth letter, Ego, as a false sense of imprisonment and over-focus on material life. The sixteenth letter, Life Experience, is described as a wake-up call, “a moment of both freedom and awakening.”

Each letter of the Major Arcana describes a corresponding Archangel, with some duplicate assignments (for example, archangel Michael shows three cards: the Emperor, the Wheel, and the World. Gabriel represents both the Empress and the Awakening). For those unfamiliar with the Archangels and their energies, a brief introduction to each Archangel follows in the guide book.

Throughout the deck there is also an interpretation of 2-3 lines at the bottom of each card, perhaps useful as an insight for deeper analysis. You can offer new ideas you’ve never thought of before.

The Lesser Arcana is quite traditional, with rows of Pagem, Knight, Queen and King. Interpretations include the possibility for cards to represent people, energies or predictions.

All the messages in this deck, as well as the illustrations by Steve A. Roberts, are positive and beautiful, maintaining the magical effectiveness of the traditional tarot.
